Learning Outcomes Assessment: An Overview of the Process at Texas State
Dr. Beth Wuest, Director, Academic Development and Assessment and Ms. Lisa Garza, Director, University Planning and Assessment
February 25, 2009

Academic programs are expected to have defined student learning outcomes with appropriate assessment methods to aid in providing evidence of program success and to encourage improvement in student learning.  Although Texas State is in its third cycle of formalized student learning outcomes assessment, many faculty members have just recently become engaged in this process.

This workshop will provide participants with a working knowledge of the student learning outcomes assessment process at Texas State.  The overall intent of this workshop is to encourage thoughtful discussion and planning necessary for effective student learning outcomes assessment.   In the workshop, participants will learn:
  • the value of student learning outcomes assessment
  • procedures for the outcomes assessment process at Texas State
  • how to use tools for reporting outcomes assessment
  • how to identify and describe the program mission, outcomes, methods of assessment, results, action plans, and evidence of improvement

Learning Outcomes Assessment: Planning Assessment Strategies
Dr. Beth Wuest, Director, Academic Development and Assessment and Dr. Gail Ryser, Director, Testing, Research-Support and Evaluation Center
March 10, 2009

Last fall, academic programs revised their student learning outcomes and assessment methods, and indicated expected targets for achievement. This spring, programs will provide results on their outcomes for the 2008-2009 academic year, identify action steps for improving the learning experience for students in subsequent years, and provide evidence of improvement in student learning.

Ideally workshop participants will have a working knowledge of the student learning outcomes and methods of assessment for their program prior to this workshop.  The overall intent of this workshop is to encourage thoughtful discussion and planning necessary to report results, develop action plans, and note evidence of improvement. In the workshop, participants will consider
Methods for collecting data on student learning outcomes success
Ways to most effectively report results
Appropriate action plans based on the results
Improvements in student learning

Join colleagues in discussions regarding the process and strategies for assessing student learning outcomes, developing viable action plans and identifying evidence of improvement.
